Orthopaedic Oncology

Bone and soft tissue tumors, though uncommon, present unique challenges due to their complexity and potential impact on both life and limb function. Managing these conditions requires not only advanced surgical expertise but also seamless coordination between multiple specialties. Our orthopaedic oncology unit is committed to delivering comprehensive, evidence-based care for patients with both benign and malignant tumors, ensuring the best possible clinical and functional outcomes.

We begin with a strong emphasis on early and precise diagnosis. Many bone tumors may initially present with subtle symptoms such as persistent pain, swelling, or reduced joint function. Our team utilizes state-of-the-art imaging modalities—including digital X-rays, MRI, CT scans, and PET scans—to evaluate the lesion in detail. Image-guided biopsies are performed with utmost precision to confirm the diagnosis while minimizing complications. Each case is carefully reviewed in a multidisciplinary tumor board to formulate an individualized treatment strategy.

Our surgical approach is centered on oncologically safe tumor excision combined with maximum functional preservation. Limb salvage surgery is our preferred approach in most cases, replacing the need for amputation in the majority of patients. These procedures involve removing the tumor with adequate margins while preserving critical neurovascular structures. Advanced techniques such as computer-assisted surgery and patient-specific instrumentation may be utilized to enhance accuracy.

Following tumor removal, reconstruction plays a vital role in restoring mobility and stability. Depending on the location and extent of the tumor, we offer a range of reconstructive options:

  • Mega prosthesis reconstruction for large bone defects, especially around joints like the knee, hip, or shoulder
  • Biological reconstruction using autografts (patient’s own bone) or allografts (donor bone)
  • Joint-sparing procedures in selected cases to maintain natural joint function
  • Custom implants designed to match the patient’s anatomy

For malignant tumors, treatment often extends beyond surgery. We provide integrated oncological care in collaboration with medical and radiation oncologists. This may include neoadjuvant (pre-surgical) or adjuvant (post-surgical) chemotherapy and radiotherapy, depending on the tumor type and stage. Our coordinated care ensures timely and effective delivery of these therapies.

We also recognize the importance of rehabilitation and long-term follow-up. Post-surgical physiotherapy programs are tailored to each patient to restore strength, flexibility, and functional independence. Patients are closely monitored through regular follow-ups to detect any recurrence early and to manage long-term outcomes effectively.

In addition to treatment, we prioritize patient education and emotional support. A diagnosis of a bone tumor can be overwhelming, and our team is dedicated to guiding patients and their families through every step of the journey—from diagnosis to recovery.

Our ultimate goal is to achieve complete tumor control while preserving limb function and quality of life. Through cutting-edge technology, skilled surgical care, and a compassionate multidisciplinary approach, we strive to provide outcomes that are not only clinically successful but also life-enhancing for our patients.
